At Expert Tech we take online security very seriously, which is why our hosting plans are carefully optimised to ensure they are as secure as possible. However there are still a few potential security risks running a website which we cannot control. As the website owner there are a number of things you can do to ensure your website is safe.

Never use “admin” as a username

Over the past couple of years there have been a number of attempts to attack WordPress websites with the username “admin” to gain access to sites and servers. If you use the username “admin” and a weak password, your website is extremely vulnerable to an attack. Fixing this is simply a case of creating a new administrator account via your WordPress control panel and then deleting the original ‘admin’ account.

 Use a strong password

Research as has shown that around 8% of hacked WordPress sites are down to weak passwords. For a strong password, try to use both upper and lower case letters, at least one number and a special character. Do not use words or dates that are easily associated to you or your business.

Keep WordPress and installed plugins up to date.

With a busy schedule and your mind on other aspects of your business, it is easy to overlook these very simple but crucial steps in ensuring the security of your website. WordPress continuously update sits version of the platform. These updates usually introduce new features and most importantly updating and securing and vulnerabilities in its code. Similarly the plugins installed on your site will follow suit and release an update for the same reasons.

To check if your website requires any updates, login to your WordPress site and check on the Dashboard for any notifications.

QUICK TIP: If you host your site with our C-Panel  your website will automatically update the latest WordPress version as soon as it is released as well all your plugins!

Add some extra security to your site

There are a number of plugins available to add another layer of security to your WordPress site, however we particularly like Wordfence. It is easy to set up, notifies you when someone attempts to log in to your site and will help protect your WordPress site from attacks.

Keep regular backups

Regularly backing up your website is so important to ensuring your website is secure, yet so many people forget to do this. As part of Expert Tech’s hosting package we install Updraft Plus on all our sites which provides daily backups. You can easily restore any part of your site through the control panel giving up complete peace of mind.

If all of this seems a little overwhelming don’t panic. All of our hosting packages come with 24/7 support, so if you ever need any help with your site, we’re always on hand to assist.
